Project Overview
The North End redevelopment involved a residential scheme located close to existing industrial activity and transport infrastructure. While some industrial noise sources were not expected to form part of the site’s long-term operational context, their presence at the time of assessment introduced complexity in establishing representative baseline conditions for planning purposes.
In addition, the proposed development included air source heat pumps, requiring assessment of plant noise to demonstrate that future operation would not adversely affect neighbouring receptors.
Kimber Acoustics was appointed to develop a comprehensive planning-stage noise strategy that addressed both existing environmental noise conditions and noise generated by the proposed development itself.
Scope of Acoustic Services
Our work included a BS 4142 assessment of proposed air source heat pump noise, undertaken in the context of a baseline environment influenced by nearby industrial activity. Traffic noise prediction was also carried out to assess external noise exposure across the site.
Façade-level analysis informed glazing, ventilation, and layout decisions, ensuring internal noise criteria could be achieved. Close coordination with the design team allowed mitigation measures to be developed that were robust and proportionate, avoiding unnecessary over-specification while remaining defensible to planners.
Outcome
The noise strategy provided clear, evidence-based justification for the proposed development and supported the planning submission. Our input demonstrated that acceptable residential acoustic conditions could be achieved despite the site constraints, contributing to submission of the planning application in June 2025.
